A Chest That Is Close To One’s Chest At the onset of colonization, large chests of drawers were used by the colonists because there were no closets or wardrobes then where they could store their clothes, blankets, and linens.

The first chests were simply large boxes of wood with hinged lids. Chests have since evolved to consist of more than just one drawer and became what we know today as chests of drawers.

In this age and times, a chest of drawers, large or small, has become an integral part of the modern home for various reasons. A large chest of drawers made of solid wood is undoubtedly a lifelong storage of clothing and other personal effects that could otherwise be part of the clutter if left unorganized.

A large chest of drawers not only stores things; it does so in style, lending a semblance of grace and refinement in the room. Aside from its space-saving feature, a chest of drawers is so versatile that it can be moved from one part of the house to another, it can be a decorative furnishing in itself, or its top can be used to display other decorative articles on.

Although there are no applicable measurements for size, a large chest of drawers is usually above the waist or higher in height and its width may be as long as or longer than its height. Its earlier cousins are the tallboy and the highboy, popular during the eighteenth century. A tallboy is a piece of furniture with a wardrobe incorporated in the upper half and a double chest of drawers in the bottom half, while a highboy consists purely of drawers of different widths.

While contemporary wardrobes are fast catching up with chests of drawers, the latter are still the fancy of opulent homeowners to enhance their stature in “society”. Inevitably, a large chest of drawers, to live up to its role, should be made of the best solid wood material available in the market.

Among others, the most ideal types are the high-cost oak, walnut, cedar, and mahogany, and the budget-friendly pine and satinwood. Or can you imagine a large chest of drawers made of cheap plywood standing in the middle of a large, stately house? Depending on the owner’s taste, the chest set may be simply smoothly sanded or elegantly carved or sculpted before being varnished or finished with a coating or paint suitable to the type of wood used. Brass, bronze, or chrome handles for each drawer should complete the ensemble.

Caring For Your Large Size Chest Of Drawers

Being a lifetime possession, a large chest of drawers should be pampered with proper care and maintenance. The surface of the chest should be regularly cleaned of dust and dirt with a soft cloth or a vacuum cleaner with a tender suction brush. Excessive water should never be applied on the wood surfaces as water can cause stains or chip off the varnishing or paint.

Occasionally, say once in two months, the wood surfaces can also be treated with nature-based oil, polish, or wax to enhance the wood grains, thereby, bringing out the intrinsic beauty of the wood. Moving parts, such as rollers or runners, should be checked, repaired, or replaced when needed. Loose parts, like screws or drawer handles should be tightened.
